Gigamic Quarto

Quarto is a simply spectacular games. It’s like Tic-Tac-Toe and Chess had a baby.

The game is played on a 4×4 board, and each of the 16 pieces has a different set of attributes.

First, the pieces are black or white, next they are hollow or solid, they are short or tall and finally they are square or round.

The object of the game is to get four pieces all sharing an attribute in a row – four tall ones, four black ones, and so on. The fact that there are four ways of looking at each piece makes this game mind-bogglingly awesome, but still super simple to pick up. It’s suitable for ages 6 and up, and is surely destined to be a classic, if it isn’t one already.

Don’t get me wrong; I love those super-in-depth games where you’ve got a thousand pieces and five hundred playing cards and a wonderfully elegant and complex rule system, with expansion packs and all the rest of it, but there’s something about a nice simple game with wooden pieces and a nice simple board.

Of course, not all games of this kind are made the same, with some being too simple to have much lasting appeal, and others being a bit clunky and unsuitable for players of different ability levels.Gigamic Quarto Box

Quarto, however, is just a brilliant game. You play on a four by four board, and there are sixteen pieces. Each piece is kind of like four pieces – it is a black or white piece, a hollow or solid piece, a square or round piece, or a tall or short piece. The aim of the game is simply to get four pieces sharing one of these attributes in a row.

The real twist comes from the fact that you do not choose which piece to play – your opponent chooses for you. It’s a bit like that riddle where there’s one guy who only tells the truth and one who only lies – you have to filter your strategy through the other player if you want to win. Each game will take you no more than twenty minutes, so you can have a bunch of games in one session. It’s a great game to watch too  – since the four attributes of each piece lend the game hidden dimensions which it is simply fun to puzzle out, whether you are playing or not.

The game itself is beautifully made, and you get the real feeling of playing some a wonderful artifact from a peaceful and enlightened future.
