This is a family run site, brought to you for your board gaming pleasure. My wife and I love to play against each other (it’s a good way to relieve the stresses of the day!) But we found that it was a bit of a pain finding board games that are specifically designed for two people to play.

So Board Games 4 Two was born!

Gobblet

An ingenious twist on a 4×4 tic-tac-toe or naughts and crosses style game. The twist comes in the form of the pieces themselves – they nest, rather like Russian Dolls. This means that you can place a larger ‘Gobblet’ over a smaller on of either colour. As the game progresses,… Read more

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You Want to Test Your Wits in an 18th Century Battle?

stratego gameStratego Original!

An absolute classic in every sense of the word. Stratego has been around in one form or another for over a hundred years. The classic Stratego released in 1944 was very likely based on the old Chinese game – Jungle. The board is the sight of a battle between you and your opponent. You each have 20 pieces to deploy on the battleground, but only you know the value of the pieces. You can also make any of your pieces into bombs. Once you have set up your strategy and put all your pieces in play, the game begins and you engage your enemy. Great fun!

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You Want to Get Medieval on Someone’s Ass?

the-duke-board-gameThe Duke!

Meant for ages 8 and above, but potentially playable by a lively six year old, The Duke is not unlike chess. However, the board is a little smaller, and games will take up to half an hour at the most. Most games will be done in fifteen mins. It’s beautifully made, and surprisingly quick to learn. It has a great Medieval feel, and there is much here to reward the serious gamer.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You’re Feeling Brutal?

dreadballxtreme gameDreadball Xtreme!

This is an updated and revised version of the brutal Sci Fi Sports classic rom 2012, Dreadball: The Futuristic Sports game. It is fullly compatible with that version of the game, but you can play with just this version – it’s a standalone game. This new edition has been somewhat streamlined – the games take less time on average, and referees have been removed – making this game hit harder and finish faster.

The centrepiece of the game is the ultra violent ball game, Dreadball, and you play this out with an impressive array of dice and beautifully designed miniatyures on a a fully customisable game board. This game integrates with other games in the Dreadball series, meaning you can really customise your game. Also, this version of the game allows you to play as a game sponsor, the shadowy figures who organise the games – this means you can customise your team to your heart’s content. A great game for ages fourteen and up, but a precocious 10 year old will probably have no problem with it. Pretty complex to get started with, but, like many games of this type, well worth the effort.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You Want to Practise Your Poker Face?

quarto board gameQuarto!

Quarto is a simply spectacular games. It’s like Tic-Tac-Toe and Chess had a baby. The game is played on a 4×4 board, and each of the 16 pieces has a different set of attributes. First, the pieces are black or white, next they are hollow or solid, they are short or tall and finally they are square or round. The object of the game is to get four pieces all sharing an attribute in a row – four tall ones, four black ones, and so on. The fact that there are four ways of looking at each piece makes this game mind-bogglingly awesome, but still super simple to pick up. It’s suitable for ages 6 and up, and is surely destined to be a classic, if it isn’t one already.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You Want a Battle that Goes Down in History?

battle cry board gameBattle Cry!

This is a reasonably heavy-duty war game, in that each game takes a good couple of hours to play. Having said that, the game mechanics are very simple and straightforward, so you can get into right away – you don’t find your first game lasting massively longer than all your subsequent games as you struggle, turn by turn to work out what the hell you are supposed to be doing. Game pieces allow you to set up reconstructions of various historical battles, right down to the terrain and the compositions of each army. Each player gets 61 great miniatures to play with, and they help to make this a really enjoyable and atmospheric game.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You’re Feeling Ancient and Oriental?

sun tzuSun Tzu!

This is a game of strategic warfare based not on the roles of the dice, but by tactical deployment of your armies across the key points of the board. The inspiration is the 6th century Chinese general Sun Tzu, who penned the classic business and warfare handbook The Art of War. It was tactical ingenuity that led Sun Tzu to victory, and similarly that is what will win the day in this great little game. Game cards feature quotes from the master himself, and Sun Tzu’s opponent in the game is the real-life King Shao. King Shao had the numerical advantage over Sun Tzu, but was tactically naive and consequently defeated. Can you re-write history? The answer is yes you can – over and over again as it happens, as this game has great replay value.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You’re Feeling Like a Competitive Grandma?

patchwork board gamePatchwork!

It may sound a little strange at first, but this game is literally about making a Patchwork quilt! Two players compete to create the highest-scoring, and most aesthetically pleasing quilt you can, in this great rapid-fire little number that will have you hooked from the first play. Goodness knows how they came up with this one. It’s like if Tetris were re-designed by a quilt-making enthusiast. Don’t let the strange concept put you off – and anyway if you still think quilts are too girly you should wake up and realise this is the 21st Century! You can blast through a few games in no time, making it a great one for best of threes or fives. You have to marshal both your buttons, with which you buy pieces of quilt, and your time – each piece has a time value too. Just a quality game in all respects.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You Feel Like Being an Intergalactic Warlord?

warhammer-40000-conquest card gameWarhammer 40,000: Conquest!

This is one of the latest in a very long line of Warhammer games, and as the name suggests, this one is set in the impossibly far-flung future of the 41st Century. Players take command of two opposing warlords battling to control a planetary system. It’s what’s known as a ‘living card game’ meaning that there are expansion packs of many different stripes available so you can customise your games in whatever manner you like. The basic game offered here though gives plenty of entertainment and high-thrills interplanetary strategic war-play. Each Warlord has different characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, so part of the re-play value lies in mastering the nuances of each main character. It’s for ages 14 and above, since it’s pretty involving, but it’s an award-winning game and rightly so.

What is the Best 2 Player Game for When You Want a Fast Paced Game of Skill?

othello board gameOthello!

Put ’em down! Turn ’em over. Turn ’em over again. Yeah! I love this game, possibly because I’m almost unbeaten at it. If anyone has ever beaten me then I’ve forgotten about it and I’m not sure they ever have to be honest. Anyways, as long as you’re not playing me then there is much fun to be had from this particular game. It’s just so pleasing pulling off a great big move and turning your opponent’s field of one colour over into your colour. A minute to learn, a lifetime to master, so that tag line goes. I’m not actually that good, I played against a computer a couple of times and got absolutely hammered. Games take around a half hour. Beware, this game is extremely fun. 🙂
